What To Do at Mackinaw Island

Mackinaw Island is very small island located in Lake Huron off the coast of Michigan. The population is very small. There are only around 500 to 600 residents year-round, but there are thousands of visitors and tourists that come and go, especially during the summer months. There is a law prohibiting the use of motor vehicles with a few exceptions. The island is so small that no one really needs them.

There are many things to do on the island. Many people go boating in the lake. A few annual boat races are held near the island. Golfing is also an option. The golf course is one of the rare locations where motor vehicles or golf carts are allowed. Visitors enjoy renting bikes from different vendors. They can even bring their own bikes with them onto the ferry, the only mode of transportation to enter and leave the island, for a small charge.

There are also many shops as well as historic sites. The island is known for their delicious fudge. All the visitors and tourists buy this fudge causing them to be referred to as the "fudgies." In the past, the island was home to an Native America tribe before Europeans took the land for the fur trade. Later, the island was used as a fort. Evidence of this history is still on the island. The most prominent and famous building on the island is the Grand Hotel. This hotel is very elegant and fancy. Many of the visitors stay there on their trip.
