Skiing was developed by Nordic people to help with hunting, military maneuvers and as a means of practical transportation. Skiing has evolved into one of the greatest sports and hobbies of many people in the United States. A lot of people think you have to go the Europe to get great skiing but the United States has several areas that are extremely popular and great places to ski. Here are a few of the top favorites in the United States.

Aspen, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains and offers a European-style ski village. Its villages have been around since the early ‘60s and are very popular with many celebrities.

Another very popular ski area that is not too far from Aspen is the Heavenly Ski Resort. It is located at Lake Tahoe and is considered the largest ski resort in the United States. This cozy town provides skiing on both sides of the border between California and Nevada.

In that same region is Deer Valley Resort, which is located in Park City, Utah. This resort was the official site of the 2002 Winter Olympics. It has been rated as the No. 1 ski resort in North America by the readers of “SKI” magazine.

It you live on the East Coast, there are plenty of great skiing areas there as well. Killington Ski Resort, located in Vermont, is rated the No. 1 ski area on the East Coast. So regardless of where you prefer to ski, there are many great ski areas in the United States.
